Accounting Clerk 1 – Certificate Program 2008-2009

This Accounting Certificate Program curriculum is designed to prepare our graduates for employment in entry-level accounting positions working in Payroll and Accounts Payable/Receivable.

Individual courses include:

Accounting Principles 1 – 1 quarter

Learn accounting concepts, procedures, terminology and practices relating to service and merchandising businesses. Students are required to take Business Math and MS Office 1 before or concurrently with Accounting Principles 1.

INDUSTRY SECTOR: Business and Finance

MS Windows/Internet – 1 quarter

Recommended for beginning computer users. Learn computer fundamentals, MS Windows, basic file management and an introduction to key applications in the Windows environment. This course is aligned with IC3 Certification standards. (Recommended as a prerequisite or concurrent enrollment with MS Office computer courses.)

INDUSTRY SECTOR: Business and Finance

MS Office 1 & 2 (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access) – 1-2 quarterS

MS Office 1 (Word, Excel, Outlook); MS Office 2 (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint Access)

Students will be introduced to the concepts and basic operational skills utilizing word processing, spreadsheets, scheduling, presentation, and data base management skills.  Students will complete a variety of business projects with an emphasis on program integration

INDUSTRY SECTOR: Business and Finance

Accounting Principles 2 – 1 quarter

Students will continue to learn accounting concepts, terminology and practices related to service and merchandising businesses. Receive hands-on training through applying accounting and computer knowledge to a variety of business situations. (Prerequisite: Accounting Principles 1 and MS Office 1 must be taken before or concurrently with Accounting Principles 2). Students having a strong accounting background may take the course with instructor approval.

Business Math – 1 quarter

This course covers payroll, cash receipts, taxes, interest, labor costs, inventory evaluation, and sales.  Articulates with Ohlone College must see instructor for details.

Payroll – 1 quarter

This course includes preparation of paychecks, deposits and payroll tax returns, identification of independent contractors, and an introduction to state and federal payroll law. Topics include employee files, payroll tables, payroll processing, employee termination, and manual adjustments.

MVROP CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS AND COURSES

Mission Valley ROP offers several Certificate of Achievement programs. These programs have been designed with input from local business and industry representatives. A certificate program is a sequence of courses that provide our graduates with a portfolio of highly marketable skills. Although the courses are designed as integral parts of the entire program, they may be taken on an individual basis. Enrollees in the programs are awarded a Certificate of Achievement upon completion of the academic and attendance requirements outlined in the particular area of study.
