Medical Assisting Front and Back Office –
Certificate Program 2008-2009
To qualify for the Clinical Class and Internship, all required classes must be completed with a "B" or better, and a score of 10.0 or higher in a Basic Skills Assessment for Reading, Math, and Spelling.
Recommended course sequence to attain both certificates:
1st Quarter
Office Skills/Medical 
Students will study filing (alpha, numeric, records management, computerized filing), keyboarding, telephone techniques, and proofreading as related for medical office occupations.
MS Office 1 (Word, Excel, Outlook) 
Students will be introduced to the concepts and basic operational skills utilizing word processing, spreadsheets, scheduling, presentation, and data base management skills. Students will complete a variety of business projects with an emphasis on program integration
Medical Terminology 1 
Learn the language of medicine. Medical, surgical, diagnostic, therapeutic terms and abbreviations will be taught using a body-systems approach. This is a two-quarter course.
2nd Quarter
Medical Coding & Billing 1 
This is a two-quarter introduction course to the basic principles of ICD-9-CM diagnostic coding and CPT procedural coding for the physician’s office. A strong background in medical terminology and/or completion of the two-quarter Medical Terminology course is required.
Medical Office Management 
Medisoft is a computer software system used to perform administrative functions in medical offices. Learn to input patient information, schedule appointments, handle billing, produce lists and reports, and process insurance claims electronically. Typing knowledge is desirable.
Medical Terminology 2 
Learn the language of medicine. Medical, surgical, diagnostic, therapeutic terms and abbreviations will be taught using a body-systems approach. This is a two-quarter course.
3rd Quarter
Clinical Skills 
This is a two quarter course where students will be trained to perform the skills necessary to obtain an entry-level medical assisting position in a doctor’s office, clinic, hospital and other health care facilities. Students learn medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology, medical law and ethics, secretarial skills, the skills needed to assist the physician in an office setting and general work place skills.

4th Quarter
Hire Image 
Land the job of your dreams! Learn how to create a high-tech digital portfolio, master interview techniques, dress for success, practice workplace survival skills and enhance your business presentation skills. Class must be taken near program completion.

5th Quarter
Internship 
This is a one-quarter capstone class in which students are placed in medial facilities to gain on-the-job training. Students receive up to 160 hours of work-based learning plus attend one class per week. Students will receive an American Heart Association CPR/BLS certificate and a certificate of completion for injections and phlebotomy after meeting course requirements. This course is for continuing students only.
