This course introduces students to the basic concepts of the science and business of biotechnology. The course includes overviews of biotechnology product development cycle, bioethics and relevant laws and regulations. Students will learn laboratory procedures including basic laboratory math and statistics, experiment design and laboratory safety procedures. This course explores biotechnology techniques involving recombinant DNA, DNA replication, protein synthesis, transcription, translation, PCR, cloning and chromatography. Students will prepare for career opportunities such as labeling operators, packaging specialists, bio-process technicians, instrumentation analysis, media prep technicians and related positions in pharmaceutical manufacturing. Students are expected to complete an internship with a Biotech company as a component of the course. (UC “D” credit pending!)
