MISSION VALLEY ROP TEAMS TAKE HOME GOLD MEDALS AT ANNUAL COMPUTER REPAIR COMPETITION

FREMONT, CA - (March 29, 2007) - Mission Valley ROP (MVROP) sent six teams to compete at the 7th annual Students Recycling Used Technology (StRUT) competition held at Mission College last Saturday.  Of MVROP’s six teams, four took home gold medals, while two teams received silver and bronze medals.  MVROP teams comprised of students from Irvington, American and Kennedy High Schools in the Fremont Unified School District.

Every year StRUT hosts a competition for elementary, middle school, and high school students, which includes three components:  disassembling/reassembling a working PC; blind troubleshooting non-working PCs to determine the specific problem; and a written test similar to the A+ industry certification.  Teams are judged by a combination of industry and education experts.  In addition to medals, the winning team is awarded IBM ThinkPad laptops. High test scores winners are also awarded an iPod Shuffle.

“We are extremely proud of the students for their high achievements in the competition,” stated James Scarborough, MVROP instructor.  “We congratulate all our teams, especially those who received the competition’s two top prizes for Best Overall and Highest Test Scores.”

About Students Recycling Used Technology
Students Recycling Used Technology, StRUT, is a program incorporated into schools where students take donated computers and computer components and upgrade them for the use in schools. Students involved in StRUT evaluate, repair and refurbish donated computers and in turn donate those computers to local schools. Students gain valuable skills and schools get free computers.

Silicon Valley StRUT currently operates from Mission College in Santa Clara. The SVStRUT has implemented a systemic approach, emphasizing education and curriculum to complement the recycling component. We currently serve 20 elementary through high school sites and have placed over 4,500 free computers in schools, worth over $3,278,000 in computer costs.  Visit their website at www.svstrut.org .
