Agriculture and Natural Resources

Veterinary Assistant arrowA

This is a one-year course providing training for students interested in animal-related careers, particularly veterinary medicine and technology.  The course includes instruction in terminology, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, laboratory techniques, animal restraint, veterinary nursing, rooming, and front office skills. 

Prerequisite: Instructor approval. Includes internship. Articulates to Foothill College.

Arts, Media and Entertainment Technology

Computer Animation arrowA

Students will create video, web, and television/film animation in 2D and 3D.  Adobe Aftereffects, Macromedia Flash, and New Teks Lightwave 3D are all used emphasizing timelines, key frames, layers and interactivity.  Class projects include the virtual of video backgrounds and titling banners, animated elements and special effects for video, e-cards, web animations and 3D movies.  Class may be completed in 4 quarters.

Computer Graphic Design 1 & 2 arrowA

Learn how to layout newsletters, articles, mailers, and posters with Adobe InDesign.  Retouch photographs and create original artwork for print, web, animation, and video using Illustrator and Photoshop.  Design animated presentations with Flash.  Create portraits, paintings, and posters with school supplied writing tablets, flat bed scanners, color laser printers, and large image laser plotters.  Level 1 may be completed in 4 quarters. This course may be taken a second year for more advanced instruction.

Digital Sound Design arrowA
Learn how to use microphones, audio mixers, sound systems, and digital audio recording tools.  Students will create original recordings and sound effects using school supplied synthesizers and software such as Fruity Loops, Adobe Audition and Cakewalk Sonar.  Live recording utilizing students and in house talent is emphasized.  Students are encouraged to create their own work for projects that include Digital Storytelling, Radio Theater and Sound Design for animation and video.

Building Trades

Construction Technology 1 & 2 arrowA
Students will gain knowledge and experience with carpentry, electrical work, and plumbing.  Instruction includes hands-on projects in new home construction. Following completion of the year-long course, students will be qualified for entry-level positions in the construction field. This course may be taken a second year for more advanced instruction.

Business and Finance

Accounting Principles 1 arrowA

Learn accounting concepts, procedures, terminology and practices relating to service and merchandising businesses. Students are required to take Business Math and MS Office 1 before or concurrently with Accounting Principles 1.

Accounting Principles 2 arrowA

Students will continue to learn accounting concepts, terminology and practices related to service and merchandising businesses. Receive hands-on training through applying accounting and computer knowledge to a variety of business situations. (Prerequisite: Accounting Principles 1 and MS Office 1 must be taken before or concurrently with Accounting Principles 2). Students having a strong accounting background may take the course with instructor approval.

Accounts Receivable/Payable arrowA

This introductory course covers the basic concepts and vocabulary of fundamental recordkeeping activities related to accounts payable and accounts receivable. Basic concepts include sales records, inventory records, accounts payable/receivable records and basic accounting records.

Applied Excel arrowA

This advanced course provides hands-on experience in mixed cell references, working with multiple worksheets, templates, lookup and financial functions, macros, databases, and advanced formatting for business applications. Prerequisite: MS Office 1 and Ms Office 2 and Business Math.

Business Correspondence arrowA

Compose memos, business letters, and job search correspondence. Completion of Business English or strong language skills is needed for success in this course. Articulates with Ohlone College when taken with Business English.

Business English arrowA

Review punctuation, numbers, capitalization, grammar, and word usage as applied to business communication. Articulates with Ohlone College when taken with Business Correspondence.

Business Math arrowA

This course covers payroll, cash receipts, taxes, interest, labor costs, inventory evaluation, and sales.  Articulates with Ohlone College must see instructor for details.

Hire Image arrowA

Land the job of your dreams! Learn how to create a high-tech digital portfolio, master interview techniques, dress for success, practice workplace survival skills and enhance your business presentation skills. Class must be taken near program completion.

MS Office 1 & 2 (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access) arrowA
Students will be introduced to the concepts and basic operational skills utilizing word processing, spreadsheets, scheduling, presentation, and data base management skills.  Students will complete a variety of business projects with an emphasis on program integration
MS Windows/Internet arrowA
Recommended for beginning computer users. Learn computer fundamentals, MS Windows, basic file management and an introduction to key applications in the Windows environment. This course is aligned with IC3 Certification standards. (Recommended as a prerequisite or concurrent enrollment with MS Office computer courses.)
Office Skills/Business arrowA
Train for office occupations using up-to-date office equipment and methods. Students will study information processing, telephone procedures and filing, communication skills, decision making and problem-solving.
Payroll arrowA
This course includes preparation of paychecks, deposits and payroll tax returns, identification of independent contractors, and an introduction to state and federal payroll law. Topics include employee files, payroll tables, payroll processing, employee termination, and manual adjustments.
Quickbooks arrowA
Designed for small businesses, QuickBooks is a complete accounting system. The software package allows the user to save time and organize their business finances.

Explore your creative side! Students will develop the skills and knowledge required to enter the exciting field of clothing design, buying, management, promotion, and manufacturing. This is a 4 quarter course. This course may be taken a second year for more advanced instruction.

Analyze and create aesthetically pleasing interiors using the principles and elements of design. Instruction includes space planning, color, textiles, furniture, lighting, and drafting skills related to architectural interiors.  This is a 4 quarter course. Education, Child Development and Family Services

Careers in Education/Developmental Psychology 1 and 2 arrowA

This course is designed for students interested in working with children as a profession as well as gaining knowledge of child growth and development. Develop skills in leadership, supervision of children, equipment operations, and curriculum development. A TB test is required. This is a year-long (4 quarter) course. This course may be taken a second year for more advanced instruction.  An internship is an integral part of the course.  Articulates with Chabot College and Ohlone College.

Energy and Utilities

HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, Appliance Repair) arrowA

Students will learn fundamental principles and service techniques required to diagnose and solve HVAC problems in repairing refrigerators, washers, dryers and other equipment. The course will help you prepare to take the federal EPA Refrigerant and/or Automotive Freon licensing examinations. Prerequisite: A TABE Basic Skills Assessment for Reading, Math, and Spelling is required, with a score of 10.0 or higher.  A clean DMV and background check are necessary for job placement assistance.  Course is designed to be completed in 4 quarters.

Engineering and Design

CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) arrowA

This course provides instruction in AutoCAD. CAD drafting has a wide variety of application areas.  Students will learn the basic CAD skills and pass two exams at the end of each quarter to receive a certificate.  Students will investigate a specific area of interest and work to become confident in that area. Course is designed to be completed in 4 quarters.

Health Science and Medical Technology

Medical Coding & Billing 1 & 2 arrowA

This is a two-quarter introduction course to the basic principles of ICD-9-CM diagnostic coding and CPT procedural coding for the physician’s office. A strong background in medical terminology and/or completion of the two-quarter Medical Terminology course is required.

Medical Terminology 1 & 2 arrowA

Learn the language of medicine. Medical, surgical, diagnostic, therapeutic terms and abbreviations will be taught using a body-systems approach. This is a two-quarter course.

Office Skills/Medical arrowA
Students will study filing (alpha, numeric, records management, computerized filing), keyboarding, telephone techniques, and proofreading as related for medical office occupations.
Medical Office Management arrowA

Medisoft is a computer software system used to perform administrative functions in medical offices. Learn to input patient information, schedule appointments, handle billing, produce lists and reports, and process insurance claims electronically. Typing knowledge is desirable.

EKG Technician Certificate Program arrowA

Students will cover basic concepts of the cardiovascular system including anatomy, physiology, and essential skills needed to operate the equipment and perform an EKG. Students will learn advanced EKG performance skills including ambulatory monitoring, stress EKG, interpretation, and clinical instruction. Successful completion of the course will qualify the student to apply for certification as an EKG Technician by the National Healthcareer Association.

Prerequisite: High school diploma or GED and must be 18 yrs. of age or older; a TABE Basic Skills assessment for reading, math and spelling is required with a score of 7.5 or higher.

Requirement: Must have a “B” or better grade in the first quarter to be eligible for internship. Duration of the course: 2 quarters, includes internship

Public Service

EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) arrowA

Emergency Medical Technicians provide routine and emergency medical care with an ambulance service or fire department, as well as in hospitals and clinics. Becoming an EMT is the first step towards becoming a paramedic. The program will prepare you to identify and manage the basic care of victims of trauma and sudden illness. This course consists of both classroom and skills training, as well as clinical observation. Students who complete the program are eligible to sit for the national certifying examination.

Requirements: Clean background check, professional CPR certification to include either American Heart Association Healthcare Provider, American Red Cross Professional Rescuer, or equivalent.  CPR certification will be provided in class with additional fee of $15 for BLS book.  Must attend information session prior to first day of class.

Forensic Science arrowA

Forensic Science is a fast-paced, rigorous, multi-disciplinary, college level course integrating concepts and state standards from Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Earth Sciences. Topics covered include crime scene analysis, physical/chemical analysis, microscopy, chromatography, hair/fiber/glass analysis, fingerprint comparison, comparative analysis, document analysis, firearms, drugs/toxicology, entomology, anthropology, blood (serology) and DNA analysis. Guest speakers from a wide range of fields add to the class by providing real applications in the field of forensic science. (Duration: 4 Quarters)

Transportation Technology

Auto Body/Painting and Refinishing 1 & 2 arrowA
Learn to identify and use materials, tools, and equipment. The course includes welding and auto body work with an emphasis on custom refinishing. This course may be taken a second year for more advanced instruction. (The course may include a lab fee and/or special project fee.)

Automotive Technology 1 & 2 arrowA

Prepare for a career as an auto tune-up and/or emissions specialist. The course includes basic theory and application in engine overhaul, tune-up, electronic diagnostic procedures, emission control, operation and service preventative maintenance, front-end alignment, brake mechanic operations, and drive-train service. This course may be taken a second year for more advanced instruction. (The course may include a lab fee and/or special project fee.)
