Arts, Media and Entertainment

Computer Animation:

Students will create video, web, and television/film animation in 2D and 3D. Adobe Aftereffects (1 quarter), Adobe Flash (1 quarter), and NewTek's Lightwave 3D (2 quarters) are all used emphasizing timelines, key frames, layers and interactivity. 3D studies include introductions to modeling, texturing, rigging, lighting, morphing, and dynamics. Class projects include story telling projects, titling banners, animated elements and special effects for video, e-cards, web animations and 3D movies. Production methods and teamwork are emphasized with project groups utilizing students from Digital Sound Design and Computer Graphics courses. Class may be completed in four quarters. This course may be taken a second year for more advanced instruction.

Computer Graphic Design 1 & 2:

Students will learn how to layout newsletters, articles, mailers, and posters with Adobe InDesign. Retouch photographs and create original artwork for print, web, animation, and video using Illustrator and Photoshop. Design animated presentations with Flash. Create portraits, paintings, and posters with writing tablets, flat bed scanners, color laser printers, and large image laser plotters. Production methods and teamwork are emphasized with project groups utilizing students from Digital Sound Design and Computer Animation courses. Level 1 may be completed in four quarters. This course may be taken a second year for more advanced instruction.

Digital Sound Design 1 & 2:

Students will learn how to use microphones, audio mixers, sound systems, and digital audio recording tools. Students will create original recordings and sound effects using synthesizers and software including; Digidesign Pro Tools, Adobe Sound booth and Cakewalk Sonar. Live recording utilizing students and in house talent is encouraged. Production methods and teamwork are practiced with project groups utilizing students from Digital Sound Design and Computer Animation courses. Students will create their own work for projects that include Digital Storytelling, Radio Theater and Sound Design for animation and video. This course may be taken a second year for more advanced instruction.

Building Trades

Construction Technology 1 & 2:

Students will gain knowledge and experience in residential and commercial construction techniques, including fundamentals of carpentry, electricity, and plumbing; instruction includes safety, project planning and hands-on projects. Students will be introduced to industry-standard residential and commercial roofing and solar photovoltaic systems. Construction industry representatives will provide lectures and demonstrations in system design and installation of solar PV panels, inverters and associated equipment. Following completion of the year-long course, students will be qualified for entry-level positions in construction, roofing and solar fields. This course may be taken a second year for more advanced instruction.

Health Science and Medical Technology

EKG Technician Certificate Program 2011-2012 (SEE BROCHURE )

Students will cover basic concepts of the cardiovascular system including terminology, anatomy, physiology, and essential skills needed to operate the equipment and perform an EKG. Students will learn advanced EKG performance skills including ambulatory monitoring, stress EKG, interpretation, and clinical instruction along with CPR in first two quarters. During the third and fourth quarters, students will be placed in medical facilities to gain on-the-job training and will receive up to 80 hours of internship. Students are eligible to take Certified EKG Tech exam at the end of the fourth quarter. Students are prepared for ‘CET’ as per National Health career Association standards (NHA).

Payment: Checks or cash are not accepted for payment. Students must pay for class using a credit card - VISA/Master Card.

Prerequisite: High school diploma or GED and must be 18 yrs. of age or older; a TABE Basic Skills assessment for reading, math and spelling is required with a score of 7.5 or higher. Mandatory orientation will be given prior to the start of class. Dates and times will be posted on our website. The following immunizations are required (more details given at the orientation/information session):

Hepatitis B - 3 shot series – first two must be done before internship

MMR- 2 shot series 1 month apart

Chickenpox - 2 shot series 1 month apart

TB shots - 1 shot taken in two consecutive years if negative, 1 shot + x-ray if the shot is positive

Flu - may be declined

TDAP- Booster dose required

Requirement: Must have a “B” or better grade in the first quarter to be eligible for internship and background check clearance from city police office.

Duration of the course: 4 quarters, includes internship, timings TBD.

Medical Assisting - Certificate Program 2011-2012

Students will learn the skills necessary to obtain an entry-level front and back office medical assisting position in doctors’ offices, clinics, hospitals, and other health care facilities. Students learn medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology, medical law and ethics, office administrative skills, and general workplace skills. During the third quarter, students will be placed in medical facilities to gain “on-the-job” training. Students receive up to 160 hours of internship.

Payment: Checks or cash are not accepted for payment. Students must pay for class using a credit card - VISA/Master Card.

Prerequisite: A Basic Skills Assessment (TABE) for reading, math, and spelling is required with a score of 10.0 or higher. Mandatory orientation will be given prior to the start of class. Dates and times will be posted on our website. The following immunizations are required (more details given at orientation):

Course Description: This is a three-quarter course. Class is held 6 hours a day, 5 days a week. Students will learn the skills necessary to obtain an entry-level front and back office medical assisting position in doctors’ offices, clinics, hospitals, and other health care facilities. Students learn medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology, medical law and ethics, office administrative skills, and general workplace skills.

During the third quarter, students will be placed in medical facilities to gain “on-the-job” training. Students receive up to 160 hours of internship. Medical assistants provide direct patient care, and perform clerical office duties:

Update patients’ records

American Heart CPR

Coordinate patient lab or hospital visits

Telephone prescriptions and refill orders to the pharmacy

Complete insurance forms, schedule appointments

Sterilize surgical instruments

Perform medical billing and bookkeeping tasks

Assist with minor surgery

Take vital signs of patients

Demonstrate an understanding of appropriate and effective application of legal and ethical standards of practice

Prepare patients for and assist the physician during examinations

Understand, demonstrate, and continuously utilize the principles of medical asepsis and standard precautions, as well as other safety precautions

Administration of medication and injections

Apply knowledge and skills of various clinical procedures such as vitals, laboratory tests, and other diagnostic and medical procedures.

Phlebotomy

Demonstrate working knowledge of the human body including structure, function, and basic pathologies

Remove sutures and dress wounds

Pharmacy Technician - Certificate Program 2011-2012

This program prepares students to work under the supervision and direction of a pharmacy supervisor, or staff pharmacist, in keeping records of drugs, compounding, I.V. Admixture, drug distribution, pharmaceutical mathematics, pharmacy law, customer service, keyboarding, inpatient pharmacy basic pharmacology, presentation and leadership fundamentals, care and maintenance of equipment supplies. Successful completion will prepare students to pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board exam. Course offers Internship opportunity.

Transportation Technology

Auto Body/Painting and Refinishing 1 & 2:

Students will learn to identify and use materials, tools, and equipment, while working in a safe shop environment. The course includes hand tool familiarization and safety, welding and auto body work with an emphasis on surface preparation, priming and painting. Students may work on their own vehicles, and apply custom paint and trim. This course may be taken a second year for more advanced instruction. (The course may include a lab fee and/or special project fee.)
